P.A. and North Sask. see no job growth in September, other provincial regions experience loss in positions

Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan didn’t see any job growth in September; but this wasn’t entirely a bad thing.

While the region continues to employ around the same amount of people it did in August, according to Statistics Canada’s monthly labour report, it was the only area not to see a drop in positions.

Saskatoon-Biggar saw a decrease of around 2,700 jobs, followed by Regina-Moose Mountain which lost roughly 1,300 jobs, Yorkton-Melville with approximately 500, and Swift Current-Moose Jaw with a drop of about 100.

The educational services sector in Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan saw the biggest drop in September, losing around 700 positions.

The wholesale and retail trade sector, which remains the region’s top employer, also had a tough month, losing roughly 500 jobs.

The health care and social assistance sector, by far, had the best month as it added around 1,200 positions. No other sector saw an increase above 300 jobs.

The region’s unemployment rate stayed the same month-over-month at 4.4 per cent. This puts Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan in the middle of the province’s five regions as Yorkton-Melville and Saskatoon-Biggar have lower rates and Swift Current-Moose Jaw and Regina-Moose Mountain have higher rates.

Prince Albert and Northern Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate is lower than the country’s, 5.2 per cent, but higher than Saskatchewan’s, 4.1 per cent.
