Fuel spill all cleaned up on Prince Albert road

Everything is back to normal on a Prince Albert street after a fuel spill.

On Monday, a driver for Lake Country Co-op had a mechanical failure which resulted in diesel being released on 5 Avenue East for around three blocks.

The truck was able to pull into the Co-op gas station on the road before anymore fuel was spilled on the road.

Alex Paul, P.A.’s Deputy Fire Chief, told paNOW the department was called, and members quickly covered up the fuel with sand.

“It left a trail of fuel but there wasn’t a great deal of fuel, it was just spread out along the road for quite a ways on top of the asphalt.”

The sand was able to absorb the diesel before it could spread.

Brian Kindt, VP of Agro with Lake Country Co-op, added that the company quickly initiated their emergency response, contacting city and ministry of environment officials. He explained the situation would have been more hectic if the fuel was gasoline as it’s a lot more flammable than diesel.

The main concern was the fuel entering the city’s sewer system.

“We have spill kits on site just for these types of situations,” said Kindt. “We were able to cover up the manholes with (polyurethane) and cover it with a big pile of dirt.”

He noted they were able to cover up all manholes before any diesel was able to get in. They also power washed each area to ensure they were all clean before reopening them.

The company is currently waiting for samples of the sand to come back so they can properly dispose of it.
