Diamonds and Pearls shines with return to in-person party

There was no shortage of shimmers or smiles during a special fundraiser Friday night, for a Prince Albert preschool.

The Diamonds and Pearls event at Elk Ridge Resort included an auction, dinner, games and a dance. L’Ecole Des Petits Board Past President Shelby Lysitza noted the fact they have not had an in-person event since before the pandemic.

“We haven’t been together in the last three years so it’s nice to be in an environment where we can be together and hang out and support such a great cause,” she said.

Because they run as a non-profit, and are not part of the public or Catholic school divisions, the pre-school does not receive provincial funding so they have to find other avenues to pay for costs such as excursions and teacher salaries. The preschool that offers French language programming has three teachers.

“Without this we wouldn’t be able to have the third teacher,” Lysitza said.

Currently, there are 47 students attending preschool this year, split into four groups.

Teacher Jara MacFarlane said Covid really affected them.

“We could only accept 15 per class. We use to have 24 students in a class, with three teachers therefore 96 total,” she said.

In past years, the event raised around $20,000.

The final tally from Friday night is still being counted, but there was also lots of sponsor support this year including the Broda Group, Lake Country Co-Op and Elk Ridge Resort.
