Services in P.A. to pay tribute to the Queen

Millions said goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II Monday morning as her funeral was broadcasted to the world.

This will be followed by many public memorial services in Canada and across the globe.

Here in Prince Albert, hundreds will gather at different locations to honour the life of the late monarch.

Following the funeral Monday morning, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #2 will hold a memorial service at 10:45 a.m.

Two days later, another service will take place at St. Alban’s Cathedral. Father David Butorac explains more.

“We’re going to be having a memorial service in honour of Queen Elizabeth II,” he said. “It’ll be a traditional Anglican Evensong, it’s a particular kind of Anglican service. His honour Russ Mirasty will be in attendance.”

Butorac explains that the reason the service is held on Wednesday instead of Monday is due to royal protocol.

“We have two landmarks, so it has to be after the service in the United Kingdom and then it has to be after the service at the cathedral in Ottawa.”

With the Lieutenant Governor attending a service in Regina on Tuesday, Wednesday was the best possible day to organize the service.

Butorac added this service is for all Canadians, regardless of religious or non-religious background. He said it’s a way for everyone to honour the longest-serving British monarch of all time.

“Queen Elizabeth is the only monarch that we’ve ever known. She’s an important symbol but in a very strange way she’s become a part of our lives,” he said. “It’s a huge moment for Canada, it’s a huge loss. It’s a chance for people in P.A. and northern Saskatchewan to come together and mourn her loss.”

That service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at St. Alban’s Cathedral.

Meanwhile, a book of condolences is still sitting at City Hall for those wishing to sign it. So far, several pages have been filled by residents sharing stories and writing final well wishes to the late monarch.

The book will be available for anyone wishing to sign until sundown Monday.
