City of Prince Albert holds memorial service in honour of Queen Elizabeth II

Around 100 people gathered in front of city hall Monday for a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II, hours after she was laid to rest in her home country.

The outdoor ceremony began at 11 a.m. in the aftermath of the Queen’s funeral in London.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 2 in Prince Albert, PAFD, and the RCMP were on hand to pay respects to the late monarch.

During the ceremony, a few prayers were read while Legion president Rick Hodgson laid a wreath in front of Memorial Square as the rain began to trickle down.

Everyone in attendance was also given a poppy, to which they had the choice to lay the flower down near the wreath or keep the poppy.

Services will be taking place across the country in the coming days too, with churches in Prince Albert holding services this week.

A Provincial Memorial Service for Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to be held in Regina on Monday evening with Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty and Premier Scott Moe set to be in attendance.

Like the Legion in PA, all Legions across Canada halted activities on Monday to pay their respects to the Queen. Legion events will continue as normal on Tuesday.

The Queen’s funeral was the first state funeral since Sir Winston Churchill’s in 1965 and the biggest ceremonial event since World War Two.
