Prince Albert golfer Ring looks back on busy competition season

Golf season in Saskatchewan is never very long, and it’s beginning to wind down as the days get colder and shorter. This year, Prince Albert golfer Martin Ring was determined to get the most out of the short season.

From appearances in both the provincial and national senior championships to defending his title at the Men’s Northern, Ring was all over the golf world this season. Most recently, he was in Red Deer for the national championships, finishing plus-17 through two rounds.

“It was absolutely fantastic,” said Ring of his experience. “The Red Deer Golf and Country Club should be so proud of themselves, they did such a good job hosting the event. It was their 100th anniversary and I know what that’s like, planning events around something like that.”

The season isn’t quite finished for Ring yet, as he and others from Cooke Municipal Golf Course have still got a Ryder Cup-style matchup against the best golfers from Warman. The major events, however, have finished up and he can now look back on the 2022 season for them.

“Overall, it was probably one of my busier seasons,” Ring said. “I played in a lot of events. Sask Amateur when it was here, it’s usually an event I probably don’t play in anymore because of my age and such, but it was hard not to play in it when it was here.”

By and large, Ring noticed a reasonably cooperative weather pattern through the season. When the weather was uncooperative, however, it tended to have terrible timing.

“Elk Ridge and Waskesiu had some major weather delays,” said Ring. “Certainly, the Lobstick, we definitely ran into some significant weather issues there. Then once we hit July, July and August were so incredibly hot we had different things to take into consideration.”

Speaking of conditions, the weirder weather ended up having a small benefit to Ring’s home course at Cooke. Not only did he play many of his non-tournament rounds there, but he also got into a few major events there as well and had high praise for the state of the course.

“It continues to come up in the circles that I’ve travelled in as probably the best-conditioned course in the province this year,” Ring said. “It was absolutely phenomenal. Yeah, we see a few blemishes because we’re out here so many days during the year, but overall course conditions at Cooke, we couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Ring added his sports focus is now going to shift as he’ll be returning as colour commentator for the Prince Albert Raiders home radio broadcasts.
