Prince Albert community garden donates harvest to JSCN

Sep 7, 2022 | 3:00 PM

Over 700 pounds of vegetables have made their way to James Smith Cree Nation, thanks to the efforts of staff and volunteers at a memorial community garden outside Prince Albert.

Bonnie Sanderson told paNOW she and her husband both knew Lana Head very well, one of ten victims identified in connection to the weekend mass stabbings. The couple worked with Head years ago at the Northern Lights Casino. The couple also knew Gloria and Earl Burns.

“It is a big impact on Jessy’s garden but we are there for any member of our community, Sanderson explained. “It’s just helping our fellow man.”

Nearly two dozen volunteers showed up on Tuesday to help pick, clean and package the assorted vegetables including onions, beets, cucumbers, and potatoes. Sanderson said she was not surprised by the outpouring of support.

“Even when we do our mini-harvest for the schools, we put a call out and honestly we get at least 10 volunteers to come and give us a hand,” she said.

The delivery was made Wednesday morning by volunteers, and Sanderson said the community was very grateful.

“From what I understand they were quite excited because everything was cleaned and a lot was cut up, so all they had to do was start cooking,” she said.
