Grey Cup arrives in Birch Hills

Aug 27, 2022 | 4:00 PM

The Town of Birch Hills showed the rest of the province just how much they love the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Grey Cup was in the community Saturday for a day of festivities after it was one of six chosen by Richardson Pioneer. The town also received a $25,000 grant from the company.

A parade kicked off the day with residents decked out in Riders’ gear eager to get a chance to see the cup up close.

One such person was Norman Wait who told paNOW he’s never seen it in person before.

“Never, I don’t get a chance to go to the games either,” he said. “One day I’ll make it.”

Also out enjoying the festivities was Steve Carrier. Just like pretty much everyone else, he was ecstatic about the opportunity to celebrate the team with others in his own town.

“It’s an awesome celebration, everyone’s dressed in green and white,” Carrier said.

Along with the Grey Cup, the 620 CKRM Rider Cheer Team, Gainer the Gopher, and Rider alumni took part in the festivities.

Despite not being in the parade, Birch Hills residents Adam Dyck, Rebecca Quaale and their son, Julian, were hard not to spot thanks to their dog Winston.

“He’s got his own jersey. The cheerleaders really liked him when they came by, they came over to pet him,” Dyck said.

Along with the parade, a tailgate barbecue lunch, a nine-hole Hole in One golf tournament, a mini football camp, and a flag football game were also scheduled for the day.
