Players, alumni, and fans enjoy perfect day for Raiders Golf Classic

The sun was shining, the clubs were swinging, and the balls were flying at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course on Thursday for the 23rd annual Raiders Golf Classic.

There was plenty of green and gold on display with players and fans enjoying the perfect golfing weather while being provided with food, souvenirs, and cold drinks.

Thirty-seven teams managed all 18 holes along with 10 Raiders who were paired up with teams at random, including the two imported players who have never swung a golf club before.

“It was so much fun,” said Raiders’ goaltender, Tikhon Chaika. “It was a tough challenge but at the end of the day I could feel myself getting better.”

Along with Chaika was the other Raider import, forward Vladislav Shilo. Having never played golf before, the two Europeans started off with some chipping practice before moving on to putting. By the end of the day, they quickly got the hang of the similar sport by driving the ball down the fairway and putting the ball in the hole for par.

Although soccer is what’s most popular back home, Chaika said that he’ll be returning to Europe with a new interest.

“I’ll be spending some time back home on the golf courses,” he said. “It’s a new hobby and a way I can spend my free time.”

Raiders training camp gets underway on Sept. 1 with pre-season action getting underway on Sept. 6 versus the Saskatoon Blades in Big River. The regular season kicks off on Sept. 23 versus the Saskatoon Blades at the Art Hauser Centre.
