The Grey Cup is coming to Birch Hills!

A massive celebration is coming to a town near Prince Albert and the Grey Cup itself will make an appearance.

The Town of Birch Hills recently received a grant of $25,000 from Richardson Pioneer, one of six that were awarded by the company. The other communities to receive the grants are Abbey, File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council, Langham, Marshall, and Whitewood.

“We are proud to support the communities where our customers and employees live and work,” said Neil Banbury, assistant vice-president at Richardson Pioneer.

In addition to the $25,000 to support local sport, culture, and recreation projects, the winning communities will host a one-day party featuring the Grey Cup trophy, the 620 CKRM Rider Cheer Team, Gainer the Gopher, and Rider alumni.

For Birch Hills, that celebration takes place Saturday.

Iris Fjeld helped nominate the town for the grant and said they were overjoyed when they found out they won.

“Oh my gosh, we were really excited the day of the announcement. There were 60 entrants. They announced the top 10 about a week before and there were six that were chosen to receive the money. ”

The celebrations will start with a parade at noon, followed by a tailgate BBQ lunch. Other activities throughout the day include a nine-hole Hole in One golf tournament, a mini football camp, and a flag football game.

The festivities go into the night with supper, family dance and fireworks.

Fjeld said the community can’t wait for the day.

“We have lots of volunteers lined up, it’s going to be such a good day.”

The best part of all, the community will not only enjoy a big celebration but the grant money, along with funds raised during the day, will go to some much-needed projects.

“All the funds raised that day are going to be going towards the building of a new golf clubhouse out at our golf course. We’re in pretty bad need of one. We’ve been raising money for a few years. It’s taken some time but this will help out a lot.”
