Fireworks Ban

P.A. fire department receiving small number of fireworks complaints since ban introduced

The vast majority of people in Prince Albert have been following the fireworks ban.

That’s according to the P.A. fire department who state they’ve received eight calls since the city’s council updated the fire services bylaw back in early March.

“Eight in five months isn’t a lot, obviously we would like to see that come down to zero,” said Alex Paul, deputy fire chief.

The latest situation happened on Aug. 12 at Prime Ministers Park where firefighters found discharged fireworks but no people.

Paul noted there’s only been one time where they actually found people lighting fireworks. This happened soon after the bylaw was officially updated.

“They weren’t aware at the time that the bylaw had changed so a fine wasn’t issued to them,” he said.

Since there was no one found at the seven other incidents, there have been zero fines issued. They can be as much as $500 on their own with the possibility of it including a fee for any resulting damage.

Meanwhile, people can still launch fireworks on two days a year: Canada Day and New Year’s Eve. There were no incidents this past Canada Day, according to the P.A. fire department.

Paul understands some people are probably frustrated they can’t set them off whenever they want. However, he explains it can be a scary situation for people who don’t know they’re being set off.

“When they hear that type of noise, they don’t know if it’s a firearm going off or fireworks.”

People can read the updated fire services bylaw on the city of P.A.’s website.
