MELFORT, Sask. — Canadian Pacific Railway and the union that represents roughly 3,000 locomotive engineers, conductors, train, and yard workers have a new deal.

Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) said they have reached a two-year agreement following binding arbitration while CP Rail said the new agreement includes a 3.5 per cent wage increase in 2022 and 2023 and increased benefits.

CP Rail and the TCRC agreed to enter binding arbitration in March 2022 after they were unable to reach a deal due to outstanding issues around wages and pensions.

New research has determined the length of time and the temperatures at which African Swine Fever (ASF) virus remains infective in stored feeds.

Swine Health Information Center associate director, Dr. Megan Niederwerder, said the study was conducted at Kansas State University’s high containment biosecurity research institute and assessed the longevity of the ASF viral DNA and the longevity of ASF viral infectivity in complete feed.

“When we look at how long the virus survived it was at least 112 days at 40 degrees Fahrenheit, at least 21 days at 68 degrees Fahrenheit and at least seven days at 95 degrees Fahrenheit,” Niederwerder said. “Those give us minimum recommendations for storage times after the importation of high-risk feed ingredients.”

Niederwerder said the work emphasizes the need to look at feed sources to determine if there is the potential to reduce risk through feed by either sourcing high risk ingredients locally or by storing ingredients using the minimum storage recommendations.
