Inquest into Jayde Charles death to take place next month

Aug 12, 2022 | 1:18 PM

An inquest into the death of Jayde Charles, who had connections to Sturgeon Lake, will be held in early September in Saskatoon.

Charles, who was 20 when he died, was found unresponsive in the Saskatoon Provincial Correction Centre on December 5, 2019.

Despite lifesaving attempts by medical staff, he could not be revived and was pronounced dead.

The first day of the inquest starts at 10:00 am on September 12 at the Saskatoon Inn and Conference Centre.

The hearings are expected to wrap up on September 16 and will be headed by Coroner Brent Gough, Q.C.

Inquests are required when a person dies while in custody unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was entirely due to natural causes and could not have been prevented.

The Saskatchewan Coroners Service is responsible for the investigation of all sudden, unexpected deaths.

The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and where that person died and the medical cause and manner of death. The coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
