MELFORT, Sask. — Farm tractor sales dropped last month across the country.

An Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) report said tractor sales were down 10.7 per cent in July, down in all two-wheel drive sectors. The report also points to a 28 per cent increase in the sales of four-wheel drive tractors.

Combine harvester sales declined 32 per cent last month to 247 units sold.

Year to date farm tractor sales were down 8.3 per cent in Canada, while combines are down 22 per cent, reversing the improvement reported in June.

AEM senior vice president, Curt Blades, said the trends in farm equipment sales have followed the direction of the North American economy.

Harvest has begun across the prairies. As a result, drivers may encounter farmers using highways and grid roads to move their machinery from field to field.

Each year, there are a small number of collisions between motor vehicles and farm equipment. This type of collision is significantly more likely to result in an injury.

SGI said with the additional traffic it’s another good reason to avoid distractions and just drive. Keeping your attention focused on the road ensures you’ll be prepared for whatever you may encounter.

Over the coming weeks, agricultural producers are going to be working long days as they harvest their crops. SGI said If you like to eat, one way you can thank a farmer is by keeping them and their equipment safe on the roads.

Twelve youth leaders from across Canada are the recipients of the TD 4-H Agriculture Scholarships.

Each recipient will receive $2,500 toward their post-secondary education in agriculture, agricultural science, or agricultural business this coming fall.

The scholarships, totalling $30,000 for 2022, have been provided by TD Bank Group.
