Feds allocate $3M to enhance welfare and track farm animals

Three Canadian companies are getting funding from the federal government to enhance farm animal welfare and tracking in the country.

Animal Health Canada, located in Elora, Ont., is getting up to $2.9 million to update national codes of practice for the livestock sector. This includes the safe and humane transportation of livestock.

The Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, based out of Calgary, is receiving up to $52,000 to evaluate the use of ultra-high frequency (UHF) scanners to read cattle identification tags. This is expected to help quickly trace the movement of animals in the event of a disease outbreak.

The Canadian Poultry and Egg Processors Council, set up in Ottawa, can get up to nearly $36,000 to update its animal welfare program for hatcheries. This will help them meet the requirements of the National Farm Animal Care Council’s Code of Practice for the care and handling of hatching eggs, breeders, chickens, and turkeys.

“The dedication of Canadian producers to the welfare of their farm animals is what makes our livestock system world famous,” said Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food. “By improving our standards and practices for care and tracking, consumers can be assured that our food system is meeting the highest standards.”

The funding for the three companies is coming from AgriAssurance Program, a $74-million initiative by the federal government aimed at ensuring the best quality of Canadian agriculture and agri-food products.
