Candle Lake cleans up after hailstorm

Aug 5, 2022 | 1:05 PM

Along with some trees coming down in the community in storm yesterday evening, the Resort Village of Candle Lake also had some hail.

Mayor Terry Kostyna said the storm lasted about 15 minutes and a number of trees came down but damage from toonie-sized hail is minimal.

“There doesn’t appear to be any damage other than a number of trees are down,” said Kostyna.

One or two of the fallen trees are challenging enough that the village will hire contractors to remove them.

The power was out in on or two localized areas, but not for very long.

That wasn’t the case elsewhere across the north central band of the province as the Meadow Lake-Pierceland Areas and the region east of Nipawin that includes Carrot River, Zenon Park and all the way to Red Earth were without power Friday morning.

According to a Saskpower tweet, crews stopped working to restore lost power last night at about 10:30 p.m. for safety reasons but were back on the job this morning in Big River and rural areas near Debden.

Environment Canada confirmed a tornado touched down about 6:30 p.m. last night near Witchekan Lake, southeast of Meadow Lake.

No damage was reported from what was the 20th tornado to be reported this year.

The storm in Prince Albert and the northeast was potentially severe enough for the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency to issue a tornado/severe thunderstorm alert over the cellular network just after 8:00 pm.
