The County of Stettler says the presence of Avian Influenza has been confirmed in the region by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The affected flock is within the County of Stettler and was identified on July 30. An investigation has begun, meantime there is an established quarantine and control protocols in place.

No other specfics will be shared at this time, the County says.

Avian Flu, subtype H5N1, is highly pathogenic and is spreading in wild bird populations globally, the County notes.

“There are many resources and sources of information available on the CFIA website for poultry producers and for producers and owners of backyard flocks and pet birds,” states the County in a release.

“Maintaining strict biosecurity measures and being aware of early signs and symptoms of Avian Influenza is of the utmost importance no matter the size of the operation. Symptoms within flocks can include; lack of energy/appetite, decreased egg production, lack of coordination, coughing, gasping for air, diarrhea and sudden death.”

Bird owners are legally responsible to notify authorities of suspected cases. CFIA has a sick bird line for any owners if they suspect Avian Influenza in their birds, 403-629-1728. Small flock owners may also call 310-FARM for more information.

The County of Stettler will provide updates for informational purposes for residents and producers as they become available. The County of Stettler is not otherwise directly involved in the process.
