Prince Albert MADD receives $2,500 from high school safe grad committee

The Prince Albert chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), received a nice lift this week thanks to St. Mary High School’s 2022 Safe Grad Committee.

A cheque for $2,500 was presented to the MADD members on Thursday night. Local chapter president, Darren Deck, said the money will be used to help buy the swag that gets handed out during check stops. He also noted the fact it was youth who were thinking about the cause.

“I think it’s a huge success for them to reach out to us,” he said.

The safe grad committee comprised of 10 sets of parents, started from scratch this year. After estimating costs for things such as food, transportation, music, tents, set a budget that would be of minimal cost to graduates’ parents. In the end they would have approximately 70-80 volunteers to help chaperone, do security, handle transportation and cook.

“This event was possible due to all the support and everyone wanting their children to have a fun, memorable but mostly safe celebration with their peers,” a statement from the committee read.

Over the last few weeks, the committee has also received numerous community donations and support, which helped offset costs already budgeted for, thereby allowing them to make this donation.

“We are proud to be able to make this donation and to support a meaningful cause and help support MADD.”

On behalf of the grad class, Chessa Billo expressed her gratitude to all the parents who stepped up to ensure the grads had a fun, memorable and safe celebration.

“The goal was to make sure there was no drinking and driving and that there were fewer cars on the road to ensure safety for the graduates and our community. Drinking and driving has affected so many and MADD is a great cause to support,” she said.
