Prince Albert’s Howe to represent Canada again at Hlinka Gretzky Cup

Tanner Howe had a whirlwind rookie season with the Regina Pats, but over the course of it he went from finding his footing to finding the net on a regular basis. Now he’s found himself on Hockey Canada’s radar for the second time in four months.

The Prince Albert product was one of 23 players named to Team Canada’s roster for the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in Red Deer, Alta. from July 31 to August 6. Howe was one of 21 WHL players on the list.

As one of the youngest players in the WHL, Howe took some time to get used to the pace of the hockey last season, but once he got used to it his offensive game exploded. Howe finished his first full season with the Regina Pats with 27 goals and 69 points in 64 games, good enough for second on his team and tied for second among all players under the age of 17 in the entire CHL.

After that dynamic rookie season, Howe earned a place on Team Canada’s roster for the World U18 Championships. He played all four games for Canada at the event in Germany.

Making his inclusion on this team all the more impressive is that Howe is the youngest player on the roster, something that he’s no doubt getting used to. In fact, because he was born in November of 2005, he is the only player on the roster not eligible for the 2023 NHL draft. Howe will be up for the draft in 2024.

Raiders goaltending coach Kelly Guard will also be part of the Canadian team as its goaltending coach.

Seven of the 12 players from the WHL played in the Eastern Conference against the Prince Albert Raiders last season, including forwards Brayden Yager with the Moose Jaw Warriors, and Zach Benson with the Winnipeg ICE.

Canada most recently won the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2018. They lost to Russia in the gold medal game in 2019, and have not participated in the event since with the 2020 event being cancelled due to COVID-19.
