Melfort & Tisdale to see diseased elm trees removed over next couple months
MELFORT, Sask. — A company out of Regina will be traveling to the northeast to dispose of diseased elm trees.
Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Environment announced on Monday they’ve contracted Northern Tree Co. Inc. to help limit the spread of Dutch elm disease (DED) in high-risk areas. This includes Melfort and Tisdale.
DED is caused by a fungus spread by tiny elm bark beetles that breed under the bark of dead or dying elm wood.
Northern Tree Co. Inc. will be removing already infected trees to limit the chances of it spreading to healthy ones.
