P.A. & Northern Sask add 1,200 jobs in June

Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan are seeing their biggest job growth in nearly a year.

According to Statistics Canada’s monthly report, the region added around 1,200 positions in June. This is the second straight month where there was an increase in jobs as there were around 800 created in May.

The last time Prince Albert and northern Saskatchewan added this many jobs in a month was September 2021.

The sectors that had a good past month were wholesale and retail trade (1,000 jobs), agriculture (600 jobs), and construction (600 jobs).

The health care and social assistance sector saw the biggest loss, losing roughly 900 positions. The only other sectors to see monthly losses of more than 300 were educational and forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying, oil, and gas.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for the region is currently sitting at 5.7 per cent.

The region’s rate is higher than the province’s, 3.9 per cent, and Canada’s, 4.9 per cent.
