Aces and Astros set to host U15 Provincials this weekend

Provincial Championship ball is coming back to Prince Albert.

The Prince Albert Astros U15 boys along with the Aces U15 girls’ softball teams will host the U15 Provincial Championships with games being played at Max Power Ball Park.

With nerves running high for this weekend, both team’s head coaches believe that playing on home field and in front of family and friends will help ease the tensions.

“The boys are a little bit more excited to play in front of bigger crowds but there’s a lot on the line,” said Jordan Ambrose of the Astros. “Hopefully playing at home with a big crowd will help us out.”

“Anytime that you’re playing at home, it’s easy to have some extra motivation,” said Scott Reed of the Aces. “To have the chance to compete and (win) at home is a pretty neat thing for the kids.”

Three teams will battle it out for gold in the boy’s tournament while 14 teams will go at it in the girl’s tournament. By competing in the U15 ‘A’ tournaments, both teams have the opportunity to qualify for this year’s national championships, with the boys in Wilmot, Ontario, and the girls in Saskatoon.

The thought of competing in nationals is an achievable goal for both coaches, and the two of them are on the same page when it comes to the game plan on what they need to do to secure a spot.

“We’ve got a really good and strong team this year,” said Ambrose. “If we play well then hopefully we end up on top, and to do that, we’re going to take it one game at a time and go from there.”

“It’s a competitive age group this year and anybody can beat anybody,” said Reed. “We’ve talked a lot about taking it one game at a time and achieving small goals throughout this past season. So yeah, we’re going one game at a time.”

Games will begin on Friday morning with the Aces kicking things off as they start bright and early against the Saskatoon Hustlers at 8:00 at Rotary Park. The Astros start their tournament at play the Saskatoon Selects at 10:30 at Kinsmen Field.
