No fireworks incidents on Canada Day

Jul 4, 2022 | 12:56 PM

The Prince Albert Fire Department said it knows of no issues with fireworks on Canada Day in the first major holiday since the rules around fireworks changed earlier this year.

Deputy Fire Chief Alex Paul said he suspects things were fine both because the fireworks were allowed for several hours and because the city had their own show.

“No violations that I’m aware of because Canada Day is one of the two days where they’re allowed from dusk until 11 pm,” Paul said.

On New Year’s Eve, fireworks are allowed from dusk until 12:15 on Jan. 1.

The city made the move to ban fireworks on public and private property after multiple complaints last summer over people lighting them in the middle of the night.

While some people in the city did choose to set off fireworks on Canada Day, they did so during the allowed times, and Paul said it is likely most people watched the display put on by the City.

He said overall, people are obeying the new rules.

“I would say in large people are complying. We have had the odd complaint we have responded to this spring since the bylaw’s been enacted.”

Violators can be fined $500 and get a bill for any damage that might be caused by lighting fireworks.

Both police and bylaw officers can enforce the rules regarding when fireworks can be lit.
