Old landfills to be capped, bridges changed across Sask.

Some old landfills will be taken out of commission and some old bridges will be replaced with culverts in the latest round of infrastructure announcements.

In Melfort, the city will get just under $1 million from the federal government and over $800,000 from the province to phase out some landfill cells and return those sites to vegetated land.

“Thanks to federal and provincial funding, the City of Melfort is able to move forward with its landfill decommissioning project,” said Melfort Mayor Glenn George “Once completed, this project will help protect the environment and make Melfort and area an even better place to live, work, play and raise a family in the heart of east-central Saskatchewan.”

The city will kick in another $650,000 for a total project value of close to $2.5 million.

The announcement included multiple projects which will see costs shared between the federal government, provincial government, and the local municipalities.

Other projects in the northern area include a $320,000 project in the Town of Battleford for their landfill, just over $600,000 in Candle Lake for their landfill, and replacing an old bridge with culverts in the RM of Connaught at just under $500,000.

In Garden River, about $1 million will be spent changing a wooded bridge with three culverts and in the RM of Porcupine Plain, another $750,000 will modify another bridge.

All told, around $11 million in funding from the province and the Government of Canada will help pay for 24 projects in Saskatchewan. Local governments will put in just under $6 million.

The projects are being funded through the Rural and Northern Infrastructure stream and the Green Infrastructure of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program along with some money from the Community Building Fund.
