Preliminary hearing date set for Muskoday manslaughter case

Jun 28, 2022 | 12:00 PM

A fatal shooting incident early Christmas morning on the Muskoday First Nation is getting closer to the trial stage.

On Monday, when the matter was discussed at Prince Albert Provincial Court, a preliminary hearing date was set for Nov. 8.

David Duong, 34, is facing a charge of manslaughter for the death of Sydney Bear.

Community members have told paNOW Duong is not a band member but had been living on the reserve for a short period of time. Other members have indicated the two men may have even been friends.

The purpose of the hearing this fall will be to hear the Crown’s evidence and is one of the last steps before a case gets committed for trial.

Duong is currently in custody, having been denied bail last March.

Both the evidence discussed during Duong’s bail hearing, and the reason why Judge H. Harradence chose not to release him, cannot be published due to a publication ban.
