A Prince Albert powerlifter is now the best in the world after competing at a recent championship in South Africa.

Jessica Buettner took gold in the 76 kg women’s division at the World Classic Open Powerlifting Championships last week in Sun City.

Buettner completed all her squats, bench press and deadlifts to finish first ahead of Agata Sitko of Poland and Kimberley Walford of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Buettner’s deadlift of 261.5 kg was not only a personal best but a world record for female competitors in the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF).

Danielle Philibert also medaled for Canada in the women’s 84 kg division, claiming bronze. Simone Lai also won a bronze in the 47 kg division.

The Canadian Powerlifting Union sent 16 athletes to the open championships this year and will be represented by Rhaea Stinn in the Super Heavyweight category at the World Games next month.
