City may impound vehicles stunting at Art Hauser

An ongoing issue with stunting in the parking lot of the Art Hauser Centre has led the city to crack down on offenders a little harder.

Mayor Greg Dionne said Monday that the next meeting of the police commission will include a recommendation that vehicles be impounded rather than ticketed.

“No more tickets, we will tow vehicles. If you’re going to lay rubber, then that means you don’t need the vehicle,” he said.

Dionne was responding to a concern raised by Councillor Blake Edwards, who called the situation a mess and said that many people are frustrated.

Edwards said the situation is not isolated to late evening but is also happening earlier in the evening when the area is still being used for games.

“I have no idea how these people afford the tires, but they’re burning them off. There is smoke showing steady and somebody is going to get hurt out there,” he said.

Even though he acknowledged it as a policing issue, Edwards said it is the City’s lot and something should be done.

Users of the ball diamonds and nearby places like the minor hockey office and others have complained.

“Many people at those ball diamonds are very aggravated. I’ve seen confrontations from parents. It’s not good,” Edwards said.

Dionne said that one thing the police commission will also discuss is the length of impoundment for vehicles seized and suggested between 14 and 30 days.

Cameras in the lot may also be considered as a way to find out who the offenders are if no officers are on-site while the issues are happening.
