Tobin Lake hosts youth fishing tournament

Jun 13, 2022 | 3:00 PM

Saturday was a good day to be on the water as 26 teams left the dock at Tobin Lake to see who could catch the most fish in the annual youth fishing derby.

It was calm and not too sunny, said Lana Irving, one of the organizing committee members, which is what makes it a good fishing day.

“This year it was beautiful. It was a little cloudy so no kids were getting sunburned. There was no wind so they had a great day,” she said.

Each team that enters includes an adult and up to two youth ages 17 and younger. This year, the youngest fisherman was four, who caught some fish and some special recognition.

“For being the youngest fisherman, he got to pick from any prize on the table first of all, so he was so ecstatic,” Irving explained.

The teams each get a cooler with snacks and some tackle before heading out.

Winners are determined by the cumulative length of the fish they catch that day and the captain gets to do more than pull hooks out of fish mouths and untangle the line.

“There’s a captain and two children in each boat and the captain’s fish counts as well. So they’re all fishing, just for fun,” said Irving

Lund is a major sponsor and provided baseball caps for those fishing along with the grand prize of a 12-foot boat and a 4 HP motor.

On Saturday, that was Hayle and Khloe Dennis and their captain, Travis Dennis, with a total of 234 inches of fish caught.

Their new boat was destined for Hudson Bay.

The second-place winners get a trolling motor and a fish finder. Every child gets a prize with the choices sponsored by a local business.

Participation was down slightly over last year’s 31 teams, but Irving chalked that up to people being busier with other activities resuming with restrictions lifted.

Just like in regular tournaments, all fish must be released, and a weigh master determines the fish qualifications.

Fishing is an equal opportunity sport and lots of girls participate. One team was a dad and his daughter and that was it in the boat.

“They did quite well and they had a great day,” said Irving.
