The 2022 Canadian Wrestling Championships were held over the weekend in Calgary, and the Prince Albert Wrestling Club did very well.

Placing 15th out of 73 teams, they won a total of seven medals. This accomplishment represented a record for the club.

Among the tournament’s highlights was Angel Besskkaystare winning Gold in Greco.

According to a post on the team’s Facebook page, there was no one in her weight class and she initially refused to accept the medal because she did not believe she earned it.

“She said she wanted to win this medal not only for herself but for her family and her community of Wollaston Lake. She told her coaches that they needed to find her at least two Greco exhibition matches,” the statement said.

Besskkaystare said if she won both of these matches, then she would accept the medal.

“So we worked hard to find her two strong competitors. Well, she did win both of these matches and she did amazing! So Angel, you deserve this medal, please wear it proudly. We all love you and are proud of you!”
