Seeding progress caught up to the five-year average

The June 7 crop report from Alberta Agriculture says 93.9 per cent of the crop in the Peace had been seeded by that date.

That is the same as the five-year average for this time of year.

Seeding progress was at 2.5 per cent as of May 17. The new report said it was because of the “action and efficiency” of farmers in the Peace that so much progress has been made since.

The breakdown by crop plant as of June 7 is:

• 100 per cent of the dry peas;
• 94.5 per cent of the spring wheat;
• 93.8 per cent of the canola;
• 89.1 per cent of the barley;
• 86.8 per cent of the oats.

Soil moisture ratings in the Peace are 32.1 per cent excellent, 60.4 per cent good and 7.5 per cent fair with none rated poor or excessive.

Eighty-five per cent of pasture and 83 per cent of tame hay is rated fair or good, one per cent of each excellent, and the rest is rated poor.
