A man appearing in court this week in Prince Albert asked the judge if he could be returned to his unit at Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Grant Edward Nelson, 35, was arrested on June 4, after RCMP located a Ford 350 truck on Muskoday First Nation that was previously reported stolen in the city of Prince Albert.

As a result of a continuing investigation, officers also arrested a second man shortly after on Muskoday First Nation.

Nelson, who is from Saskatoon, appeared in court Monday. He is charged with flight from police, driving while prohibited, and possession of stolen property over $5,000. According to discussion heard in court, Nelson had been out on statutory release from Sask. Pen at the time of his arrest.

Nelson is scheduled to make his next court appearance on June 15.

The co-accused, 33-year-old Tom Crain of Muskoday First Nation is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000. He’s scheduled to make his next court appearance on June 29.

According to the most recent crime statistics from the Prince Albert Police Service (end of April), there have been 137 motor vehicle thefts this year. This represents a 30 per cent increase from the same period in 2021.
