THEATRE IN THE PARK

SUM Theatre’s ‘Wâhkôhtowin’ weaves its way to Prince Albert

Jun 9, 2022 | 8:00 AM

If you have no plans on June 15, why not come and see a play with a giant spider puppet.

That puppet is the main character for SUM Theatre’s Theatre In The Park show that will be coming to the city for the first time ever.

Artistic director, Joel Bernbaum, said the play is titled “Wâhkôhtowin”, which is a Cree word meaning “the relationship between all beings and all things.”

“(It’s) live professional theatre for everyone in the community,” he said. “Action-packed, original music, exciting puppets and actors. Great performance for everyone. We all can say that during these COVID times, we’ve really realized how important it is to honour our connections between people.”

The play follows the story of a giant spider that weaves a web representing the connection we all have with each other. However, when the web breaks and falls apart, it shows what the community needs the most and that is to be connected to each other.

The play takes place at the field by King George School starting at 7:00 p.m. on June 15. Prince Albert is the first stop in the theatre group’s northern tour. They will be in La Ronge on June 16, Stanley Mission on June 17 and Waskesiu for two shows on June 18.

The best part of all, the show is free to attend and is meant for everyone.

“Come down and experience it, whoever you are,” said Bernbaum. “No matter how old you are, where you live, what colour your skin is, we want to make this show available for you and I think you’ll have a great time.”
