Local 4-H Clubs showing off their best steers this weekend

Jun 9, 2022 | 3:00 PM

Once again, the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre will be busy this week as the Prince Albert Regional 4-H Clubs takes over the grounds.

The club is hosting its annual Show and Sale June 12 and 13.

The show is a traditional event for local 4-H clubs with more than three generations of families participating. The clubs include those from Canwood, P.A., Wild Rose and Weldon.

A big part of the weekend event will be the steer sale, which starts at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. As well, there’s a chance for people to win this year’s charity steer through the 4-H raffle.

“It gets rotated throughout the clubs in our regional area,” said Josie Hoeflicher with the 4-H Canwood Beef Club. “The club gets to choose the charity of their choosing and get to pick out the steer and figure out who in their club is going to raise the steer and get them all prepped and ready for the show.”

The steer is conveniently named Vic to reflect the charity Canwood 4-H chose this year: The Victoria Hospital Foundation.

Hoeflicher said choosing the local non-profit was a no-brainer.

“All of our funds from the charity raffle tickets will be going specifically towards a new hospital for the north within that foundation. We thought it was the best charity out of all of our choices because it will help out so many people and, especially with COVID happening the past few years, they definitely need the room and equipment, and it will help urban and rural people all around.”

The charity steer program has been with the club since 2001, with local members raising over $320,000 throughout the years. Last year, the charity steer program raised almost $150,000.

Tickets for the steer raffle are $20 each.

There will be a variety of other activities for families to enjoy at the Show and Sale including steer grooming, judging, open showmanship, and steer weigh classes.

“It’s pretty much all about having fun and doing our best.”
