Potential higher levels of wildfires, despite forecasts predicting mild, stormy summer

The Weather Network is predicting less wildfire smoke this summer compared to last year and so far they may be right.

Meteorologist Dr. Doug Gillham recently spoke with CKOM News where he predicted “near seasonal” weather with temperatures much lower than last year, which included multiple heat waves and widespread drought.

As of Jun. 1st, there have been 95 wildfires across the province which is down from the 116 that had started by this time last year.

The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is also forecasting normal levels of rain throughout the summer, but they are still anticipating a normal to above-normal wildfire season.

This is because of human activity and the weather, more specifically, lightning storms.

“These short-term weather events are difficult to forecast more than a few days in advance, which makes it challenging to predict the overall severity of any wildfire season,” read a statement from SPSA.

Gillham also predicted a summer filled with more storms which does help validate the SPSA’s anticipation of more wildfires.
