Shellbrook graduation to incorporate mix of new and old ideas

Jun 1, 2022 | 10:01 AM

With June approaching, graduation planning is in full swing.

And like many other high schools across the province, W.P. Sandin in Shellbrook will, after two years, return to having an indoor ceremony.

Due to their popularity, some events that were created during the pandemic to keep people safe, are returning such as a parade through town. Coral Lafond is one of the parents on the grad committee and told paNOW everyone loves a parade.

“It’s fun for the grads to travel in the community and see people they know, and the community members really seem to like it. Young and old alike just seem to really enjoy waving at the grads,” she said.

The parade, which will take place before the indoor ceremony, will start at the Shellbrook Motel at 1:30 p.m. and will make its way through town, passing by the rink, the library, the seniors’ apartments and the elementary school. There will also be a special stop at the Parkland Integrated Health Centre to greet the long term care residents.

The grads are scheduled to return to the school at 3:15 p.m. for the actual ceremony.

Another way the town is paying tribute to its grad class is by hanging banners on the light posts down Main Street. Each banner will contain a photo of a grad and their name. Lafond said the banners have been a great conversation piece in the community.

“I know their parents or I know their grandparents; or that kid babysat my children a few years ago,” she explained.

As some streets on the parade route can get quite dusty, the grad committee asked the town to apply a dust suppressor on the day of the parade. The town agreed to do so.
