SGI mails out last of rebate cheques

With the rising cost of living, good financial news can be hard to come by. SGI customers, however, have gotten a little bit of good news in their mailboxes over the last few weeks.

Starting in May, SGI’s rebate cheques began to roll out to customers. By the end of May, many customers had received their cheques already, and the rest were on the way.

“SGI had some capacity to deliver another round of rebates to customers,” said SGI’s media relations manager Tyler McMurchy. “Every customer who had a vehicle or a motorcycle registered on March 9 will receive a $100 rebate for that vehicle or motorcycle.”

This is the second year in a row SGI has provided a rebate, which they find to be the quickest way of getting money back into people’s pockets.

“The other way the auto fund is able to do that is through a broader rate program but those do take a bit more time,” McMurchy said, “because it’s a process that is set out in legislation that requires SGI to make an application to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel.”

They laid out their plans for the rebate in early March, and by mid-May cheques were getting mailed out.

While some cheques may be delayed until mid-June, a lot of SGI customers have already opened their mailboxes to see an extra $100 in them.

“My understanding is that all cheques have been mailed out,” said McMurchy. “If you haven’t received yours yet, you should, hopefully soon provided you were entitled to one and SGI had your right mailing address.”

Part of the goal, according to McMurchy, was to let people spend the money their own way. For many, this will mean feeding it almost directly into their vehicles with the price of gas continuing to rise, but $100 is still a nice thing to find in your mailbox.

“People are dealing with added costs of living these days,” said McMurchy. “The price of gas, of course, is very expensive. They shouldn’t have any problems finding ways to spend $100, especially if they have to fill their tanks anytime soon.”

McMurchy added the feedback from last year’s rebate was overwhelmingly positive, and this year’s looks to be heading the same way.
