Agriculture Roundup for Tuesday May 31, 2022

MELFORT, Sask. — Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) wants the crop insurance deadline to be extended.

APAS has made the request to the federal and provincial Ministers of Agriculture.

President Ian Boxall said the weather has been the biggest factor behind the request.

“This has truly been a unique year for trying to grow a crop,” Boxall said. “There are some hard-hit areas in Saskatchewan that are really struggling to get going with their seeding due to too much moisture, when this time last year we were talking about it being far too dry.”

Rain, spring snowfalls and cool temperatures have also impacted operations in both the southeast and northeast regions of Saskatchewan.

“This isn’t just a matter of farmers getting back a return on investment. This is a matter of world food security,” Boxall said.

Producers in Saskatchewan are hoping both the agriculture ministers consider meeting farmers halfway with a crop insurance deadline extension.

The Poultry Industry Council (PIC) and Western Fair Association (WFA) have decided to cancel the National Poultry Show over concerns about spreading highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

The poultry industry in Ontario has seen a drop of HPAI positive cases in the province but the pressures on producers and industry supporters to operate safely has been significant.

PIC executive director Ashley Honsberger said the organization is disappointed they had to cancel the event for the third year in a row.

“However, the safety of the industry is paramount,” Honsberger said. “We appreciate the ongoing feedback and candor of our show exhibitors, customers and sponsors as we navigate the circumstance of waiting another year for the show once again.”

Plans for the 2023 conference will be communicated in the coming months.
