Repairs to bridges at Little Red River Park nearing completion

May 13, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Work is moving smoothly on the bridge repairs at Little Red River Park in Prince Albert.

Some parts of the park were closed this week to allow the contractor to move their equipment and cranes to have the new pedestrian bridges installed.

“All three bridges have been set in place as of 10:30 this morning (Thursday). They’re not accessible yet. They still have to put the ramp on both sides and get the finishing done,” said Parks manager Tim Yeaman.

While the contractor has until the end of June to finish the project, Yeaman said they’ve so far been ahead of schedule and should have them finished by mid-June.

“The contractor just worked out really well and was able to get the bridges in much quicker than they anticipated.”

Construction on the three bridges at Little Red River started last October.

The Sliding Hill and Lions Gate bridges were both damaged after the Spruce River flooded in 2013, while the city said The Sports Council Bridge was roughly built and sways side to side. The embankments at both ends have also been eroding and the retaining wall on the north side is decaying.

Now that work on these bridges is ending soon, Yeaman is excited for the day they fully re-open.

“They’re certainly an exciting addition to the park out there and are going to change the entire landscape out there.”

Yeaman added the closures that have taken place this week should be finished by Friday.
