Obiettivi: Raiders OT hero named to Team Italy for World Hockey Championships

May 13, 2022 | 4:00 PM

Three years ago, you saw him score the biggest goal of his career, now he’s hoping to become a “Campione” in another tournament.

Former Prince Albert Raider Dante Hannoun is playing in the IIHF World Men’s Hockey Championships as a member of the Italian Hockey Team.

The tournament started Friday, three years to the day Hannoun scored the overtime winner to win the WHL Championship for the Raiders.

Hannoun played last season with HC Pustertal of the ICE Hockey League in central Europe where he scored 27 points in the regular season and three more in the playoffs.

He won’t be the only Canadian suiting up for Italy as five others Italian-Canadians were also named to the team: Alex Petan (RW), Daniel Mantenuto (C), Phil Pietroniro (D), Dylan Di Perna (D), and Justin Fazio (G).

Italy will have its work cut out for them as they are in Group A in the tournament along with Canada, Slovakia, and Germany. Group B features the U.S., Sweden, Czechia, and the host nation Finland.

The top four teams advance to the quarterfinals, with the gold and bronze medal games set for May 29.

Italy plays its first game of the round-robin on Saturday and faces Canada on Sunday.
