P.A. Catholic School Division to give 200 laptops to Grade 7 students

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division (PACSD) announced its Grade 7 students will receive a laptop to keep thanks to a new partnership.

The division has partnered with ComKids, who supplied the laptops, to create a computer safety and literacy course for all Grade 7’s this year.

Students from St. John Community School, St. Michael Community School, St. Francis School, École Holy Cross and École St Anne School took part in these lessons provided by ComKids and in partnership with the Toronto Police Service.

From January 2022 to June 2022 the schools participated in a pilot project and the principles of the lessons are to develop literacy skills and how to use technology safely.

Nearly 200 laptops will be distributed to the schools in the coming days.

The masterclasses where the children learned used the Grade 7 curriculum and topics such as online safety and maintaining digital footprints, computer literacy, becoming an engaged and educated citizen in a digital world, computer tools and how to use them, and becoming a responsible person online.

Principal Mark Cantin gave credit to teacher Mrs. Thalheimer and the Grade 7 students for their efforts in the project.

“The partnership and the course offerings were extremely worthwhile. Ultimately, the students developed digital literacy skills and learned how to use technology safely and effectively,” he said in a release.

“The Board of Education would like to thank our teaching staff, Jordan Carriere Consultant and IT Manager Sean Kenny for their dedication to participating in the pilot program,” the PACSD said in the release. “The Board would also like to thank ComKids for their support, 200 laptops, and resources for this initiative. The School Division is excited about the program and expects to extend the program to the new group of grade 7 students in the next school year.”
