Humboldt’s Ramsay takes home national goalie honours

The Humboldt Broncos spent all season raving about their man between the pipes and now the country is raving with them as Rayce Ramsay was awarded the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Top Goaltender.

The 20-year-old now-former Bronco finished off his final year of junior hockey this season with the most wins and most minutes in net of any other netminder in all nine of the CJHL leagues across the country.

The CJHL noted that his 41 wins out of 50 starts was 16 wins higher than any other goalie in the leagues and with nearly 3,000 minutes in net this regular season, he played 400 minutes more than the nearest goalie.

This is not the first award for the season for Ramsay as he also picked up the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s awards for Top Player of the Year, MVP, and Top Goalie of the Year.

In many previous interviews with northeastNOW, Ramsay consistently credited his fellow green and gold players in front of him.

“I’m just super proud of all the work the boys put in this year, you know, that’s all we could have asked for was just, you know, a good group of guys coming together and just putting in the time and effort, it takes to, you know, gel, both on the ice and off the ice.”

Head coach of the Broncos, Scott Barney, said the same about the team effort, however, Ramsay has been a leader since day one the way he worked throughout the season.

“The way he works on the ice in practice making his teammates better, off the ice when he takes care of his body allowed him to play that many games obviously, record breaking for the wins this season as well, something I feel that will never hit again,” Barney told northeastNOW. “Definitely a guy we’re gonna miss going into next year.”

The Saskatoon, Sask. product is now hitting the big city with his commitment to the University of Toronto and the USport Varsity Blues. Ramsay will also be working towards his computer science degree.

Ramsay beat out fellow finalists Kolby Thornton of the Lloydminster Bobcats (AJHL); Reece Proulx of the Pembroke Lumber Kings (CCHL); Noah Metivier of the Soo Thunderbirds (NOJHL) and James Gray of the North York Rangers (AJHL).

Ramsay is still up for CJHL MVP award along with fellow Bronco Connor McGrath who is also up for Top Forward of the Year. Xavier LaPointe of the Flin Flon Bombers is also up for Top Defenceman Award. All three award winners will soon be announced by the CJHL.

Humboldt original and Battlefords North Stars head coach, Brayden Klimosko is also up for the Darcy Haugan/Mark Cross Memorial Award for CJHL Coach of the Year Award.
