MELFORT, Sask. – The Canadian Meat Council (CMC) is implementing a market strategy with a goal to maintain existing markets and identify new trade opportunities.

In collaboration with the Canadian Pork Council and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association, the CMC is participating in trade advocacy missions, engaging with in-market intelligence specialists, and arranging inspection visits by international officials to demonstrate compliance with food safety standards for export.

The federal government is providing roughly $543,000 in support.

Canadian Meat Council President and CEO Chris White said the funding allows them to do valuable advocacy by reaching out to our counterparts and build allies to help influence decision-making in these markets.

“We are thankful that the government recognizes the importance of foreign markets for the meat industry as the demand keeps growing for our high-quality Canadian meat around the world,” White said.

The Canadian red meat sector represents the largest source of farm cash receipts totaling over $16 billion last year.

Applications are now open for the Nuffield Agricultural Scholarships.

The Nuffield Scholarship is a prestigious rural leadership program available to Canadian citizens who are involved in agriculture. It’s goal is to attract mid-career men and women who are ready to challenge themselves by doing 10 weeks of self-directed international travel study to examine and research an agriculturally relevant issue.

The recipients of the $15,000 scholarships then write a report on their research findings and make a presentation at Nuffield Canada’s Annual General Meeting.

2019 Nuffield Canada Scholar John Cote is the co-owner of Black Fox Farms & Distillery. He said the key to success in life and business is continuous learning.

“Nuffield offers this opportunity to grow and learn, but more importantly it introduces you to a network of amazing individuals who share the same passion,” Cote said. “Nuffield not only allows you to grow as an individual but allows your team at home to gain from the experience as well. By encouraging you to be away from your business, you empower your team by your absence and by sharing your journey with them.”

The application deadline 2023 Nuffield Canada Agricultural Scholarships is June 30.

The Alberta government is providing $8.4 million to expand the number of spaces at the University of Calgary Veterinary school and $59 million over three years in capital spending.

Alberta’s veterinary work force is short by an estimated 850 practitioners while demand for service of large animals continues to grow.

There are seven times more applicants than there are spaces available at the school.

Alberta Agriculture Minister Nate Horner said veterinary medicine is a key sector for the economy, especially in rural Alberta.

“Veterinarians also take on other roles that support our agriculture sector like regulatory positions, animal health research and work in the animal pharmaceutical industry,” he said.
