Outlaws fight the law in opening day loss to Heat

May 7, 2022 | 6:00 PM

The Prince Albert Outlaws officially kicked off the return of Prairie Gold Lacrosse League action to Prince Albert. They filled the Kinsmen Arena with noise, excitement and even a few heated, profane moments, they fell 12-8 to the Regina Heat in their senior league season opener.

The Outlaws had a 3-1 lead in the first period with a pair of goals from Kallen Currie and a great diving goal from Kurtis Peifer as the Outlaws scored on three of their five shots in the first period. But Regina turned up the heat as they plastered on 26 shots in the period and led 6-3. The Heat turned the game around by scoring on both penalties of an Outlaws’ 5-on-3 power play.

Outlaws goaltender Lucas Wells did well to keep the Heat bay for as long as he could, but he was peppered with shots for all three periods.

The Outlaws got back into the game in the second period and tied the game on a couple of snipes from Ethan Kennedy and a great transition breakaway goal by Brody Holizki. The Outlaws even chased Heat goaltender Jake Shannon from the game, scoring seven goals on 11 shots.

But the Heat would rebound, scoring three goals in the final six minutes of the period to take a 10-7 lead into the third period to start pulling away with the game.

Kallen Curie led the Outlaws with two goals and six points. Ethan Kennedy added an assist to his two goals. Ryan Potie had a goal and three helpers. Brendin Currie had a goal and two assists.

The Outlaw will take on the Regina Heat in a rematch next Saturday for some outdoor lacrosse action, at the Al Ritchie outdoor rink in Regina at 3 p.m. The Predators will then play a game against the Saskatoon Brewers on May 15. They won’t return home until June 3, taking on the Saskatoon Sr. Swat at 8 p.m.
