MELFORT, Sask. — Trade Minister Mary Ng and U.S. counterpart Katherine Tai say they are forging closer trade ties between their two countries, in spite of lingering irritants.

Tai said while the two countries clearly have trade differences, their interests are closely aligned in the context of competing with the rest of the world.

She also said Biden’s Buy American doctrine represents a federal procurement policy that shouldn’t be seen as a barrier to international trade.

Ng said she’s looking forward to showing her counterpart a GM facility today in Markham, Ont., where they will see integrated Canada-U.S. supply chains in action.

Alberta’s chief medical officer of health said there have been no human cases of the bird flu in the province.

The highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of avian influenza was first detected in Alberta poultry flocks last month.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw said public health nurses will be calling farmers this week to discuss ways to keep themselves, their families and workers safe.

She said it is rare for people to be infected with avian flu and there is only one case under investigation in the United States.

The Rocky Mountain Equipment (RME) community investment initiative is accepting applications from community organizations.

RME Right by You Ag Society Grant is providing funding to agricultural societies in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to support local projects that impact the lives of rural community residents.

In 2021, the Marwayne Ag Society and Drumheller Stampede and Agricultural Society in Alberta, the Melfort Agricultural Society in Saskatchewan, and Manitoba’s Hamiota Agricultural Society were selected to receive a $10,000 grant each towards their local projects.

Applications opened May 1 and will close July 30. Successful applicants will be announced Sept. 30.
