Province funding training for Indigenous people looking to enter hospitality & tourism sector

The province is looking to help Indigenous people enter the hospitality and tourism sector.

They announced on Wednesday they’re allocating $532,000 through the Canada-Saskatchewan Labour Market Transfer Agreements to create a new program that will help train around 100 individuals in response to labour needs and the goal of improving the employment rate of Indigenous people in the workforce.

This training will be offered by YWCA Prince Albert and File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council Development (FHQTC) Regina.

“Hospitality and tourism showcase our rich culture, history, and traditions and are further enriched by Indigenous participation,” said Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison.

Interested people will go through a six-week training course where they’ll be coached, mentored, and take part in a work placement with an employer. While being trained, they will also get an hourly wage. Afterward, they’ll get help finding a job in the sector.

The program also aims to support existing Indigenous employees that would benefit from mentoring to help advance within the sector.

“The Hospitality and Tourism program will help to improve the participation of Indigenous people in our provincial economy and provide a skilled workforce to help drive Saskatchewan’s economic growth,” added Harrison.
