Pattison Media nominated for RTDNA awards

May 4, 2022 | 2:40 PM

Members of the Pattison Media Group in Saskatchewan have been nominated for some prestigious broadcast journalism awards.

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) Canada has named paNOW and 900 CKBI a Prairie Regional Finalist in the category of Best Radio Newscast in a small/medium market.

The nominated newscast is from May 17, 2021. It featured several breaking news stories about local forest and grass fires, an update on a police-involved shooting, and a parole hearing for a man convicted in the Marlene Bird case – a story that had garnered national attention in 2014.

“In addition to covering those local, breaking news stories, our reporters also raised their heads to look outside of the market and deliver important stories on a national level as well,” said Karl Johnston, General Manager of Pattison Media for the Saskatchewan division. “While May 17th was an exceptionally busy news day, the efforts by our reporters to deliver news that matters happen on a daily basis and it’s an honour for our work to be recognized by a national organization.”

A new venture by Pattison Media in Saskatchewan is also receiving recognition by the RTDNA in the Excellence in Sports Reporting category.

HuskieFAN.ca and the HuskieFAN app were launched last September when Pattison Media became the first private broadcaster in Canada to commit to broadcasting a full season of women’s hockey from the University of Saskatchewan through a digital website and app. It was done using an all-female play-by-play crew helping to pave the way for future women in broadcasting. The digital platform also allows for up to three different games to be simulcast at any given time.

“In the midst of a global pandemic, our readers and listeners were anxious for good, quality news content and something to cheer about. We gave them that and more with HuskieFAN and we are proud to be leading what sports coverage should look and sound like in Canada,” said Johnston.

RTDNA Canada Awards honour the best journalists, programs, platforms, stations, and newsgathering organizations in audio, digital and video. Winners are expected to be announced later this month.
