LISTEN: Are you prepared in case of an emergency?

Local paramedics are marking Emergency Preparedness Week by making sure you and your family are ready if an emergency hits the area.

Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance said the number one thing they are doing this week is educating people on how to get prepared.

“That’s what we’re going through all of our social media networks this week just reminding folks to just do exactly that, get prepared, simple message.”

Karasiuk said those living in the city can often take the need for emergency preparedness for granted, believing there won’t be an emergency and everything will be fine.

He pointed out however that’s not true as the city was hit by a major blackout several years ago.

While he added those in rural communities might be used to blocked off roads and power outages, the message of being prepared is for everyone.

“We want people this week to start to think about regardless of whether you’re in the city or on a rural country road somewhere or on an acreage if wind, fire, flooding was to happen, what would I do, where would I go, what supplies do I need.”
