Village of Love warns of bear in town

Apr 28, 2022 | 5:00 PM

Residents of Love, Sask. are being advised to be cautious as there has been several sightings of a bear in the community.

Acting administrator Jordan Hamilton, said it was first seen right next to the Village office by a resident.

“It was in her yard, she’s seen tracks in her yard. That was two days ago and then yesterday she saw it by the tracks,” Hamilton said.

Conservation officers have been notified but are not quite willing to set up a trap in town as it can lead to other issues.

“They don’t want to set up a trap in town quite yet. They’re kind of hoping it’s just passing through,” Hamilton said.

There is a risk that a trap set for the bear could catch people’s pets or a child but if the bear is seen again, officers will take action.

Hamilton said the village has noticed an increase in the bear population in last several years, a change she attributes to lower numbers of hunters in the area as a result of COVID restrictions.

According to the province of Saskatchewan, bears frequently move around more in spring, looking for food and new territory.

To stay safe, people are advised to be noisy while outside to deter bears away and don’t leave pet food or other items that bears like to consume outside, such as garbage.

If you encounter a bear:

  • Stay calm – don’t run.
  • Make a wide detour, calmly back away, speak in low tones, and don’t look directly at the bear.
  • Never feed or approach a bear or cubs.
  • Move toward a tree or rock.
  • As a last resort, drop articles to distract the bear.
  • In most cases, black bears will threaten but not attack.
  • If attacked – defend yourself – do not play dead.
