Over a dozen firearms disposed to police during Firearm Amnesty Program in P.A.

The Prince Albert Police Service say the annual Firearm Amnesty program has been successful in the community.

More than a dozen firearms and ammunition were passed over to police by residents, more specifically 13 firearms and six batches of ammunition. The program took place from March 21 to April 10 and officers worked with the community to arrange a pickup for the firearms.

“Across the province, 241 firearms were turned in by residents. In 2019, the last time the amnesty program was offered, 283 firearms were relinquished, with 369 turned over in 2018,” as stated in the release.

The program, which is sponsored by the Saskatchewan Association of Chiefs of Police, is meant to give the public a safe way of disposing weapons that are unwanted, instead of falling into the hands of criminals. It also is an effort to reduce violent crime involving firearms in the community.

“Reducing the number of unwanted firearms that may be used in the course of violent offences has a positive impact on the safety of our community and those who live and work in Prince Albert.”
