Oh good, more snow: Alberta Clipper to hit Prince Albert

By now, even those people who need moisture are probably a little bit sick of snow. Unfortunately, even well into the back half of April, we’re not done with it yet.

Though today has brought sunshine and warmer weather to Prince Albert, melting away more of the remaining snowpack, a fresh dose is on the way. After today’s comparatively warm high of 7 C, we can look for snow starting Tuesday afternoon and continuing on from there.

“Unfortunately, if you’re talking about storm weather, it looks like Tuesday through Wednesday we do have a new Alberta clipper forming and moving its way through you guys,” said Brian Luzney, operational meteorologist with Environment Canada. “Starting Tuesday afternoon, you can expect highs near zero and snow beginning late Tuesday afternoon.”

According to Luzney, we’re looking at as much as 10 centimetres of snow over the course of Tuesday afternoon and evening, with it continuing on into Wednesday morning. The one bit of good news is that as soon as that wraps up, Prince Albert gets warmer again by the weekend. And once again, we’re dodging the worst of the weather that’s besetting points south of us.

“You guys are going to be kind of lucky, we think,” Luzney said. “Basically, there’s another big Colorado Low coming to affect southern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan this weekend. With it, it’s bringing a lot of warm air. Prince Albert looks to be, so far, out of any snow or rain.”

Today’s warmer air feels like a major jump in temperature after the week we just had, but it’s still well short of seasonal. On average, highs this time of year are over 10 C, but we haven’t gotten near that number yet. So far, Environment Canada’s prediction of a colder spring has been accurate.

Spring hasn’t just been colder, it’s featured nastier weather as well. Last week’s blizzard in southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan was the worst of it so far, the culmination of an extremely busy week for meteorologists.

“We had that big Colorado Low earlier in the week,” Luzney said. “Then another clipper system, and now another clipper system and then a big Colorado Low coming next week. We do the whole prairies here with Environment Canada, so it’s been tricky.”

Luzney added that by the weekend we’ll start to see temperatures getting closer to normal for this time of year, and we’ll probably see some more sunshine as well.
